Copper River, AK

A fish wheel with a little explanation.

Soon we’ll be writing the story of Jack and his parents traveling to Alaska to participate in salmon fishing with a fishing wheel.  They caught 1000+ pounds of sockeye salmon which they mainly used to feed the sled dogs Jack’s father had to have as a Mountie.

There are a number of videos on YouTube.  Just go to youtube.com and then search for fishing wheel.

Fish Wheels, How to Build

Fish Wheels, How to Build

See how they build the different parts of a fish wheel.

Jack told us that people built their fish wheels out of drift wood or whatever they could find.  These two in the video seemed to be using wood very close by.  Of course, since wood floats, larger logs could easily be towed by a boat to the location needed.

To us, it is very interesting to see a different way of life… and, a different way of fishing.

There are other ways that people caught salmon in the Alaskan rivers.  One method is called dip-netting.  Another YouTube video show that technique.  This one is entitled: Dip Net Fishing Salmon Run Russian River Alaska.  The salmon were running well and this one man catch them quite a few at a time.    http://youtu.be/HWP2TYc3hJg

After you have viewed that video, there are others that you can see.

Music & Passion

Music should be part of our lives.
This video is here just because it is so amazing! It doesn’t have anything to do directly with any of the children’s stories we are writing.
There is so much that you can share through this video with your family that we just wanted to make it available to you.
